"This very well known British phrase now trademarked!

On the 25th March 2011, Mark Coop of 'Keep Calm and Carry On LTD' registered a trademark of the very well known phrase "KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON" in an attempt to take control of the very British and now very famous, nostalgia invoking, wartime poster.

The trademark has angered Barter Books (who discovered the poster), wartimeposters.co.uk (owner of an original poster) and Kerry Cade from Simply Printing 4U whose business was greatly affected by the trademark. The move by Mark Coop is driven purely by greed and is far from the spirit of the wartime poster. We cannot not let this happen and we aim to reverse this. We need your help!"

If you agree, please visit keepcalmcampaign.co.uk  and ad to the petition. Feel free to leave comments about how this fiasco makes you feel...

On a personal note, and as a graphic artist who has benefited from this particular poster, in so many ways, I would also like to point out that the protection i am "granted" from this Trademark, through having traded the poster and other items prior to the application date of the mark, which was Oct 8th 2010, i have found it almost impossible to enforce this protection as we live in such a litigious, and paranoid, society that on-line stores, and related businesses run a mile when there is even a threat of legal implication in matters of IT.

Clearly this whole matter is nonsense, and so we need to show the EU that they can't grant trademarks willy nilly like this, or else where will it end? Happy Birthday? Merry Christmas?

As the nights be drawing in, and the darkness turns our thoughts to nocturnal deviance, we pirates like to think back to our past, to how our ancestors always had the worst publicity and never received the credit for their best work.

Did you know that we invented pensions? Injury compensation schemes? Equal rights? Abolition of slavery? No i didn't think you had. It's about time someone spoke up for pirates and stopped associating us with the likes of Jack Sparrow or Captain Hook.

And don't get me started on Disney, they be a whole different kind of pirates....

Aarrrgghhh!

Remember, today be Talk like a Pirate day. and if you don't, it's a keelhaulin' for all of yer!

OK so i don't write as much here as i should. But hey, nobody's perfect...

Sometimes events overtake plans, and this summer things have been so messed up it's unreal, from the weather yo-yoing day by day, making it so hard to plan any fun times at the beach or elsewhere, to the mindless but clearly organised mass lootings across the country, it's hardly been a relaxing summer, and now of course it's nearly all over, so i expect the weather to suddenly improve and everything to calm down.

We have managed some interesting times, a trip to London to see the Horrible Histories prom was a highlight. If you don't know Horrible Histories, check out Google/You Tube and take a look. The Prom (and i mean a traditional summer event, a Promenade Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, and not that other kind of prom, there was no way i was going to dress up like that!) was just awesome, as the hundreds of teens, and hardcore fans who are actually 16-25 and all dress as their favourite characters, i counted four pirates, several Georgian women, Hoards of vikings and one or two Incan princesses, had a whale of a time and made complete fools of themselves much to the amusement of the parents and others in the hall.

But there was a bonus. I use Moo.com a lot for printing. They invited us to enter a competition where we put Moo stickers on favourite places, landmarks, people etc. and photograph them. The great news was that we won and have just taken delivery of the prize, £125 worth of free printing. Awesome.

Anyway, back to London on Wednesday, to see David Tennant in a modern interpretation of a Shakespeare's classic, As you like it, and a fun night out with my eldest daughter. To say she's excited is a massive understatement.

I'll report back later in case anyone is mildly interested.

It took me almost ten minutes this morning before i realised why things had been so quiet on line, at least in the areas i visit. While the July 4th weekend is a major event in the US, the rest of us have just another Monday to look forward to.

After a weekend where we proved that we can't win at Wimbledon, again, the Monday morning letdown is just so hard to deal with. I know that we Brits seem to love being the underdog and enjoy moaning about what could have happened but it's because we don't have a choice. I guess many in the US are feeling the same about the Williams sisters also getting knocked out early...

The highlight of the weekend was actually what i did with the family on Friday, as we then spend the weekend talking about it. An exhibition at the Baltic in Newcastle of the US artist, Robert Breer - the largest ever assemblage of his work - was simply stunning. One entire floor of the gallery is currently home to a dozen or so of his kinetic pieces, from a canvas that moves on one wall, to an entire wall that makes it's way slowly from one side of the gallery to the other and back, continually. Three large domes move around randomly, as do various apparently discarded bin bags, crumpled foil sheets, a sponge looking like a porcupine and other smaller objects. The movements are barely perceptable, but there's a viewing gallery from which the whole piece comes alive and fascinates.

Several of his animated films are also on show, and many of his sketches, paintings, and ideas.

All of this is accessible for free, and if you're in the UK, i'd totally recommend you visiting.

Well i have been surprised by just how fascinating, and addictive, being on DA has become. I've made some fab new friends, met some amazing artists and seen way to much excellent work by others. I've also been incredibly surprised that i received so many positive comments about my work.

I've been branching out into other photography and added some images from a new project, Cuteables, which i am also commercialising elsewhere, and hope to turn into a brand of sorts.

Thanks to everyone who has supported my endeavours, given llamas, sent hugs and just been there with useful feedback when i need it. Keep up the amazing work and i'll try to do the same...
